More People Want Their Next Car To Be An EV
A new study, conducted by Kwik Fit, has revealed that a rising number of drivers want their next vehicle to be an EV or hybrid. As of now, 11% of drivers expect their next set of wheels to be fully-electric; up from 8% in 2020. When people considering hybrids are factored in, a total of 37% of drivers expect their next vehicle to be battery-electric to some extent. That’s a 4% increase in the last twelve months.
EV and hybrids have increased in popularity in recent years, largely as a result of subsidies and reduced running costs. Last year, 41% of drivers expected their next vehicle to be a petrol or diesel; whilst 33% wanted a low-emission vehicle. This trend has now been reversed, with the figures sitting at 35% and 37% respectively. That said, 28% of questioned drivers said they were unsure as to what sort of car they wanted; an increase of 2% since last year.
Regional Differences
Where a person lives has a big impact on whether they’re likely to anticipate getting a low-emission vehicle. For instance, 65% of drivers in London expect their next vehicle to be low-emission. That figure falls to a paltry 24% in Scotland, where most drivers expect to rely on ICE models for a while longer.
The reasons for this discrepancy are multifaceted. Some areas of the country simply have much better access to charging infrastructure. As of 2021, London still possesses a clear majority in terms of public chargers. As far as England is concerned, the situation deteoriates the further north one travels. A good indication, ultimately, that there’s a direct correlation between a willingness to embrace the technology and perceived usability.
