According to surveys, British drivers still believe in motoring stereotypes. The typical BMW owner, for instance, is perceived as a ‘obnoxious business type.’ True or not, what is known is that BMWs are the most expensive cars to operate in the UK; with the average owner forking out £2,411 every year on running costs. That’s a whopping 29% more than average, which sits at £1,688. This means that a BMW driver is forking out £8.26 every single time he takes their car for a spin. For perspective, that figure sits at £5.18 for drivers of Citroen models and just £4.77 for those who opt for a Peugeot. This was determined by MoneySupermarket. It factored in the likes of annual spends on fuel, insurance, MOTs, tax and even cleaning. How often certain brands are driven was also considered.
After BMWs, Toyota and Volkswagen models took second and third place for the most expensive cars to run. On average, these cost £2,085 and £1,900 to run respectively. Citroen, Ford and Vauxhall owners face the lowest costs. These sat at £1,647, £1,756 and £1,770. As you might expect, fuel makes up the largest cost; drivers fork out £1,124 on average each year. Insurance is the second largest source of expenditure, with the annual average cost being £374. Road tax, maintenance and cleaning account for the rest of the expenditure. There are also huge regional differences in terms of the cost of car ownership. Drivers in London face annual costs of £2,771, where as Scottish drivers only pay out £1,526.
Most Expensive Purchase After A House
Owning and running a car is likely to be the second largest source of expenditure we’ll ever face; after purchasing a house or property. Rachel Wait, consumer affairs spokesperson at MoneySupermarket, emphasised the costs involved. She said, “after buying a house, a car is probably the most expensive thing you’ll ever own, but the costs don’t stop after you drive out of the showroom”. She added, “our research finds that the average annual cost for keeping a car is almost £1,700 and differs significantly depending on the type of car you drive. Some of these costs – such as tax, insurance and fuel – are clearly unavoidable, but the good news is that savings can be made”.
