Car Insurance: The Cheapest And Most Expensive By Profession

Unfortunately, no matter how skilled you are as a driver, your job title will affect your car insurance premium. Here are cheapest, and most expensive, professions when it comes to insuring your vehicle…

Car Insurance And Job Titles

MoneySuperMarket has, once again, shed light on how a job title can mean the difference between a cheap, or expensive, car insurance premium; with major differences being reported. The average, nation-wide premium sits at £473 a year. However, professional footballers fork out £1,942 for cover. That means they pay more than any other profession; not that it probably bothers them, especially as they’re now paying £36 less than they did in 2019! However, those job titles close behind them might be a bit more irked. For instance, car wash attendants took second place with an average premium of £1,616. They’re followed by ‘sportsman’ (£1,559), fast food delivery drivers (£1,537) and abattoir workers (£1,487).

At the opposite end of the spectrum, we find that ‘guest house proprietors’ pay just £258 annually when insuring their vehicles. They’re followed by typists (£271), retired people (£275) and registrars (£289). The figures demonstrate that enormous savings can be made simply by changing one’s job title. This is because insurers use historic data in determining the risk posed by each title or profession. However, it’s important to be honest. It just might make more sense to use a more general title; just make sure to research it first!

Not The Only Consideration

Dave Merrick, car insurance spokesperson at MoneySuperMarket, commented on the findings. He said, “as with last year’s results, a range of ‘everyday’ professions – such as delivery drivers – feature in the most expensive category. Insurance companies retain vast repositories of information on previous claims, which informs the way they calculate a premium. As a result, some professions are seen as more of a risk and are charged more”.

However, he stressed more than job titles were taken into account when it comes to the cost of a car insurance premium. He explained, “it’s also important to note that other considerations will also be taken into account by insurers such as a driver’s age, their location and their previous claims history”. He added, “if you’re in one of these jobs and feel like you’re paying over the odds, you can often make significant savings on your car insurance by shopping around at the point of renewal. Doing so can save you up to £280″.
