It is necessary to check your engine oil at regular intervals in order to top it up when needed. Before checking your oil, make sure that the engine is off and cool to avoid the risk of burning yourself. It is also advised to keep your vehicle on level ground in order to see the exact amount left.

The Steps To Check Your Engine Oil:

  1. Open the bonnet, locate the dipstick, then pull on the dipstick ring until it is fully removed. Wipe clean with a dry clean cloth.
  2. Reinsert the dipstick fully, then remove and and check the engine oil level. Look at both the minimum and maximum marks on the dipstick. If the oil is below the minimum level then the oil needs topping up.
  3. Unscrew the engine oil cap, located in the engine bay, gradually pour in the oil. It is best to use a funnel to reduce the risk of spilling any oil.
  4. After the oil has been topped up, check the level again, making sure it is just below or level to the maximum mark on the dipstick.

How often should you check an vehicles engine oil?

Engine oil is checked in an annual service. Mechanics replace old oil , replace the old filter and re-fill with new oil. It is best to check your oil yourself every few weeks or before a long journey. If the oil pressure warning light comes on after refilling then it is best to get your vehicle checked by a technician as the oil may need changing.
