Drivers Collectively Lost £2.3 Million When Renewing Their Licences
Collectively, British drivers have lost out on a whopping £2.3 million by failing to renew their Driving Licences online…
Drivers Wasting Money
Drivers across the country collectively lost £2.3 million between April 2020 and March 2021. How? By failing to renew their Driving Licences online, choosing to do so by post instead. Around two million licence renewal requests were submitted to the DVLA over the period; and around 23% of these were made via post. Not only does this take longer than doing it online, it’s more expensive than conducting the process via the Gov.uk website.
Using the website when renewing a Driving Licence costs £14; with the fresh photocard typically arriving within five days. If the process is conducted via post, it costs £17 and the delivery time is longer. Moreover, the online process allows drivers to track their application’s progress in real time.
Renewing Driving Licences
Drivers are required by law to renew their Driving Licences / photocards every ten years. A reminder is provided by the DVLA when renewal is due. This is to ensure that a person’s personal details, and their photo ID, is up to date and properly verified.
Julie Lennard, chief executive of the DVLA, has stated that the online method of renewal is the easiest method – but cautioned people about using the wrong websites. She said, “our online services are the quickest and easiest way to deal with DVLA, and customers usually receive their driving and vehicle documents in just five days. Remember to always use Gov.uk when using DVLA’s online services. To renew online or find out more about renewing a licence, visit Gov.uk”.
