Driving in winter inevitably means getting your car dirty. But failing to clean it isn’t simply dangerous in some instances, it can also land you with eye-watering fines…
Keep Your Car Clean
Summoning the willpower to clean a car can be difficult at the best of times, but it’s even harder during the winter cold. However, if you needed some motivation, consider that driving a dirty vehicle can land you with fines of up to £1,000. This is because of the possibility of number plates becoming obscured. Neil Worth, GEM road safety officer, has stressed that a failure to keep number plates clean can lead to serious financial penalties. He said, “although there is no law against having a dirty car, the law is very clear when it comes to keeping your number plates clear; you risk a £1,000 fine if you allow it to become obscured”. He added, “a number plate must be readable and not covered by dirt. This is to ensure a vehicle can be identified as and when required”.
During winter, it’s easy for number plates to be struck by salt and grit; especially no wet or damp roads. You don’t need to thoroughly clean your car, but soaking your car’s plates from time to time makes sense. As long as they’re clearly readable from a fair distance, they’re legal.
Dirt Is Dangerous
A dirty vehicle isn’t the nicest thing to look at, but it can also pose some serious safety issues. It’s especially important that drivers keep their car’s lights clean and free of debris; again, especially during the winter months. Short days and long nights mean that lights become more important than ever; and it’s important they’re bright and unobstructed for maximum visibility. Worth explained, “it makes sense to get into the habit of giving your number plate a regular wipe – every day when conditions require. Do the same for your front and rear lights, and you will be doing your bit for safety during this risky time of year”.
So, keep your car clean in order to avoid enormous fines and to keep yourself safe whilst you’re behind the wheel.
