Driving Abroad? GB Stickers Won’t Be Valid From September

After September 28th, GB car stickers will cease to be valid for drivers travelling abroad. They’ve been in use for over a century…

GB Stickers Discontinued

It’s the end of the road for GB stickers. Having been in use for an impressive 111 years, they’re set to be discontinued on the 28th of September. They’ll be replaced by a ‘UK’ sticker, being rendered obsolete and therefore no longer valid for travelling abroad by car.

The move is thought to be political, an alleged sign of solidarity between Westminster and Northern Ireland; and a product of friction surrounding controversies that concern trade following the country’s withdrawal from the European Union. Whilst Northern Ireland is a constituent part of the United Kingdom, it isn’t geographically a part of the island of Great Britain; this, it’s claimed, has irked some motorists in Northern Ireland.

Notifying the UN

Whilst the change seems like at trivial one, it’s an international matter. In a letter to the UN, the government stated “the United Kingdom is changing the distinguishing sign that it had previously selected for display in international traffic on vehicles registered in the United Kingdom, from “GB” to “UK”. This change will take effect on 28 September 2021″.

The change of stickers follows recent changes to car registration plates. The new plate contains the Union Flag, and replaces a previous scheme that included the stars of the European Union’s flag surrounding ‘GB’.

A number of drivers will now have to change their plates, or affix an additional UK sticker to their cars from September. As the AA pointed out, no formal announcement or forewarning was given by the government; with the detail being discovered by the organisation only after reviewing footnotes in UN-related documentation.
