Euro NCAP is Europe’s most well-known car safety testing body. It’s recently named the safest cars of 2021…
Euro NCAP
Thanks to Euro NCAP, we now know which cars are the safest on the roads. At the top of its list in 2021 was the Mercedes-EQ EQS; it took the top spot in both the pure-electric and executive categories. Close behind in the EV category was Polestar’s 2 model, in second place. Interestingly enough another EV, the Skoda Enyaq iV, came out top in the off-road category. For drivers with a tighter budget, the likes of the Nissan Qashqai, Skoda Fabia and Toyota Yaris Cross all won in their own, respective categories.
Euro NCAP is known for its rigorous testing methods; and its commitment to ever stricter standards, in order to ensure continuous improvements. In order for a car to claim the top spot in a particular category, there has to be at least three entrants and the winner must achieve a five-star rating. When there’s a tie, the cheaper car is named as the winner.
Michiel van Ratingen, Euro NCAP’s secretary general, commented on 2021’s results. He said, “we saw quite a number of new car models coming to the market, many of them electric or hybrid, and many of them achieving five-star ratings despite the demanding requirements”. He added, “well done to the winners as well as to the runners-up, some of which were very close contenders for the top slot in their respective categories”.
