EV Chargers Will Be Mandatory For New Homes From 2022
Chargers for electric vehicles (EVs) are to be made mandatory for new homes and buildings from 2022 under a new law…
Mandatory EV Chargers for New Homes
Today, the Prime Minister is due to outline a plan to overhaul building regulations; mandating that new homes and buildings, including supermarkets and workplaces, install EV chargers. According to the government, the plan will mean that up 145,000 chargers will be installed throughout England each year. For perspective, 250,000 chargers have been installed at homes and workplaces so far.
In a statement, the government said “with the majority of charging happening at home, this will mean people can buy new properties already ready for an electric vehicle future, while ensuring charge points are readily available at new shops and workplaces across the UK – making it as easy as refuelling a petrol or diesel car today”.
‘Green Industrial Revolution’
The government has announced that it intends to ban the sale of new diesel and petrol vehicles in 2030; followed by hybrids in 2035, and HGVs in 2040. As a consequence, it’s having to scramble to ensure that charging infrastructure can support the change. This means installing accessible, and sometimes rapid, public chargers, standardising payment methods and making EVs more affordable and attractive themselves.
Boris Johnson will deliver a speech later today at CBI (Confederation of British Industry) conference. There he will state that “this is a pivotal moment – we cannot go on as we are. We have to adapt our economy to the green industrial revolution. We have to use our massive investment in science and technology and we have to raise our productivity and then we have to get out your way”.
