EV drivers who aren’t able to charge their vehicles on driveways or in garages face £1,000 in extra charging costs each year…
Drivers Without Off-Road Parking Face Increased Charging Costs
A new study suggests that EV drivers who lack off-road parking are, on average, paying £1,000 more for charging than those who can at home. Conducted by Electrifying.com, it found that people dependent on public chargers are paying around £91.75 a month. For perspective, drivers with home chargers will be paying around £13.75 a month.
The result is that drivers who can’t charge on a driveway or in a garage are paying £78 more each month than those who can. As a consequence, motorists are discriminated against based on where they live and in terms of the nature of their property. It’s thought that around 40% of the nation’s motorists are unable to charge at home, too.
Making Things Fairer
Efforts are under way to compel the government to render charging more equitable. The FairCharge campaign, for instance, wants better regulations so that prices at public chargers are similar to those available at home.
Sarah Winward-Kotecha, the RAC’s director of EVs, has called for a fairer approach to charging. She said, “the UK’s journey to zero-emission driving is now well underway, but it’s vital that the switch to electric happens as quickly and efficiently as possible”.
She added, “there are many issues with public chargers such as cost, availability, reliability, speed of charging and ease of payment, which have the potential to either accelerate or slow down EV adoption depending on how they are handled. Our decision to support FairCharge is all about making sure that charging provision in all shapes and forms is both fit for purpose and fair”.
