Five Ways You’re Wasting Money On Your Car

Driving has always been costly, but the cost-of-living crisis is making things worse. Here’s five ways you’re wasting money on your car…

Sitting On Car Insurance

Not long ago, people with car insurance faced a so-called’ loyalty tax’ if they remained with the same provider indefinitely. Insurance companies would take advantage of their customers idleness, raising premiums for existing customers over time. Fortunately, this practice has now been banned. However, people still regularly waste money on their car insurance by refusing to shop around.

You’ll almost always find a cheaper quote, or a more appropriate policy, if you consider your options. Try to get at least three quotes before making a decision.

An Inappropriate Model

This is something that a lot of drivers are guilty of. We all have different needs when it comes to motor vehicles, but we should only purchase models that reflect those needs. There’s absolutely no reason, for instance, for an urbanite to purchase a fuel-guzzling SUV. Moreover, there’s no reason for someone who rarely drives in the countryside to opt for something with off-road capabilities.

Think about the sort of roads you drive on, how many miles you typically cover and how much space you need. By avoiding superfluous features, you’ll likely save money.

Premium Fuel Options

Premium fuel is available at many petrol stations. However, it’s completely unnecessary for the vast majority of drivers. It’s claimed that it offers better mpg ratings, or that it’ll help to maintain a car’s parts and components. However, the only cars that are likely to experience any benefits are super cars – powerful, niche models that few of us ever get our hands on.

Given the soaring price of fuels, premium options make even less sense.

Driving Aggressively

We get it, you’re fed up of traffic or the slowpoke in front of you. But driving aggressively is never the answer. First of all, it poses a danger to you, your passengers and other road-users. Secondly, all of that harsh acceleration, late braking and sharp maneuvering is going to entail wear and tear at a much faster rate. By keeping things smooth, your car is less likely to need additional maintenance work and you’ll likely experience a better fuel economy, too.

Needless Journeys

Many drivers in the UK travel by car when an alternative would suffice, including walking. Cars are practical and private, which is why so many of us favour them over the likes of public transport. But using them to pop to the local newsagents is just a waste of fuel. In addition, it might sometimes make more sense to take a train or to use a bus. Assess your options, and use your car when it’s efficient to do so if you want to save money.
