Long distance driving can be physically and mentally demanding. Here’s a few ways you can make things easier…
Prepare your Vehicle
The last thing you want to happen on a long drive is a breakdown. So, you should make some basic car checks before setting out on your journey. Ensure that your tyres are properly inflated and have enough tread depth. Inspect fluid levels and top them up when necessary. Test that your lights and wipers are working, too.
Pack the Essentials
There are probably some things you’ll want to take with you when you plan on covering a lot of ground. A few essentials include water, snacks, your phone and a means of charging it. You may also want to pack some weather-appropriate clothing, should conditions or temperatures be likely to change.
Plan your Route
Even with a sat nav, it’s always wise to plan the routes you’ll be taking on a road trip. Proper planning can help you avoid road works, difficult to navigate roads and other obstacles that may prove to be stressful. Think about what your priorities are, time or ease.
Think about your Comforts
We all have little rituals whilst we’re driving, things that can make the experience more pleasant. It might be a favourite music playlist, or preparing a list of podcasts. Perhaps you like having a fan inside your car, or removable heated seats? Create a checklist and make sure you’ll have everything you enjoy with you.
Get Plenty of Rest
Long, monotonous car journeys can really challenge us – physically and mentally. You should try to get plenty of rest and sleep before your journey. You might also find that some caffeine helps, too.
Take Regular Breaks
As a general rule, you should take a break every 100 – 150 miles travelled behind the wheel. Or, alternatively, every couple of hours behind the wheel. Take the opportunity to stretch your legs, use the toilet and clear your head.
Give yourself Enough Time
A sure way of stressing yourself out on a long car journey is failing to leave yourself a good amount of time. Feeling that you’re in a rush will affect your judgement and render the whole experience a negative one, Set out with plenty of time to spare.
Share the Load
If possible, try to share long car journeys with someone who’s insured to drive your vehicle. It’ll reduce the physical and mental strain. Even if they can’t drive the vehicle, having some company may make things less laborious and dull.
