Half Of ‘Keyless’ Car Owners Are Failing To Protect Their Keys

New research suggests that up to half of all keyless car owners are failing to protect their keys, putting their vehicles at risk…

Keyless Drivers Failing to Protect Keys

Research conducted by AA Insurance Services has revealed that half (51%) of the drivers in possession of keyless cars are failing to protect their car keys or. This means that their vehicles are vulnerable to tech-savvy car thieves; who can divert signals from poorly guarded key fobs straight back to vehicles using a ‘relay device’. This means that they can steal a vehicle quickly, and without making any noise.

Keyless car thefts are getting worse, too. Vehicle thefts rose in the 2021/22 period by 22% when compared with 2020/21, Of those drivers who do protect their keys, 22% are using a faraday pouch which blocks signals. Some 9% are using metal boxes, 7% are using safes and 1% are using foil or microwaves.

High-Tech Car Thieves

Gus Park, managing director of AA Insurance Services, commented on the keyless car theft phenomenon. He said, “car thieves have gone high-tech and relay theft has been on the rise for some time, yet drivers are still unaware of the risks surrounding keyless entry cars. Keyless entry is becoming more common too with more manufacturers offering the tech on lower specification cars”.

He added, “drivers should do all they can to protect their keys. While a minority store their keys in the microwave it is not recommended and there are simpler ways of safeguarding your vehicle. For as little as a tenner, people can reduce the risk of theft by keeping their keys in a faraday pouch. Depending on the spare key, drivers may need two as this may also be a keyless entry key. They should also be stored well away from the front door and kept out of sight”.
