Here’s How To Make Your Car Last As Long As Possible

The average lifespan of a car in the UK is around fourteen years. But there are ways to make them last even longer. Here’s how…

Don’t Abuse your Car

The primary reason any car will age, unnecessarily, is because they’re abused. That is to say, they’re not driven in a responsible fashion. Harsh acceleration, late braking and excessive speeds are all going to take their toll on a vehicle’s parts and components. If you want your car to last as long as possible, treat it with some respect and adopt a smooth driving style.

Schedule Servicing

No matter how good a driver is, their vehicle is inevitably going to need to be serviced and maintained. Some motorists dislike visiting garages, they fear the technical jargon and simply don’t like investing their free time. But scheduled and regular servicing will help maintain your vehicle and help to avoid smaller issues becoming bigger (and more costly) ones.

Keep things Clean

Modern cars are fairly robust, and can withstand the elements. But this isn’t to say that they’re entirely immune to dust, dirt and grime. Regularly cleaning your car, both inside and out, will help to maintain its frame, coating and upholstery. It’s even more important to keep on top of cleaning if you’re regularly driving on country or rural roads.

Invest in Quality Parts

If one of your car’s components or parts fail, you may be tempted to save money by going for a cheap replacement. Resist the temptation. They’re, essentially, a question of false-economy. They won’t last long and can cause other issues. By investing in quality parts, you’ll like save time, money and stress in the long-term.

Avoid needless Weight

Contemporary vehicles can usually deal with quite a bit of weight. The average car, after all, can comfortably transport between four and five passengers. This isn’t to say, however, that you should overburden your vehicle. Excessive weight can place strain on tyres and suspension systems. So, remove anything from your vehicle that isn’t needed at the time.

Inspect your Tyres

Tyres are the only thing that separate a vehicle from the hard road surface. In short, they’re extremely important. Given that they’re facing consistent friction and wear, you should regularly inspect them. Ensure that they have plenty of tread, that they’re free of damage and have the correct air pressures.

Top up Fluids

All of a car’s fluids play a vital function. If there’s too little of any one of them, you can face serious problems. Fortunately, it’s easy to keep an eye on them, and top them up, without visiting a garage. Keep your oil, coolant and screenwash at appropriate levels. Oil should be replaced when it looks dark and dirty.

Inspect your Battery

A flat battery can lead to drivers having to jump start their cars. This, unfortunately, can damage engine management systems. You should inspect your battery on a fairly frequent basis, looking for signs of rust or leaks. You should also try to use for vehicle fairly frequently, as long periods of inactivity can cause it to go flat. If you know you won’t be using it, consider investing in a trickle charger.
