Electric vehicles have better ranges than ever before. But there’s still ways to optimise things if you want to get the most out of your battery…
Plan your Journeys
A good way of extending the amount of range you can get out of your EV is simply to plan your journeys. Think about how many miles you’ll be travelling, and the nature of the roads. More miles should, in theory, mean burning through more electricity. But you can also save energy by taking routes with lower speed limits and fewer obstacles, such as steep inclines.
Think about your Speed
The higher the speed you’re travelling at, the more power your EV is going to use. You should avoid speeding in general, but even more so if you’re looking to extend your car’s range. It’s also worth remembering that a speed limit is just that – a limit and not a goal. Travel at a fair and responsible speed in order to save power.
Regenerative Braking
Regenerative braking essentially redirects charge from an EV’s braking system back to the battery. It limits the amount of wasted electricity. Always make sure your regenerative braking is switched on, and adapt your driving style to ensure that you’re getting the most out of it.
Be Conservative with the AC
Your EV’s battery is also powering things like the air conditioning system and heated seats. The more often you use these things, the more power you’ll be redirecting from the car itself; the result is a diminished range. Avoid needlessly using in-car tech if your goal is to maximise your car’s range.
Keep things Smooth
The near-instant acceleration offered by electric vehicles can be enormously satisfying. But it can also lead to abuse. There’s no need to harshly accelerate in an EV and, if we do, we’ll be needlessly wasting power. Keep things smooth and steady for economical driving.
Look after your Tyres
If your car’s tyres are worn, don’t have the correct air pressures or are damaged in any way, your battery will have to work harder in order to get them to move. That means using more power. Regularly inspect yours and make sure they’re in a good condition.
