Here’s How To Safely Pass Horses On The Road Whilst Driving

With nearly two horses killed on Britain’s road network each week, it’s never been more crucial that drivers know how to pass them safely…

Passing Horses Safely

Shockingly, nearly two horses are killed on the UK’s road network every week. According to the British Horse Society (BHS), 1,037 incidents were recorded in one year alone. Of these, 81% were caused by drivers attempting to pass whilst too close to the animals. Fortunately, there are simple steps that motorists can take to ensure their own safety and that of horses and their riders.

According to BHS, drivers should…

1) Slow down to a maximum speed of 15mph

2) Be patient, avoiding the use of the car’s horn or revving its engine

3) Pass the horses ‘wide and slow’, allowing at least a car’s width when possible

4) Driving away slowly, only gaining speed when a suitable distance has been reached

Not Always Drivers

Jaimi McIlravey, a content executive for the road charity IAM RoadSmart (and a horse rider) has urged drivers to careful around horses. She said, “please continue to be careful when driving close to horses. From personal experience, it’s not always a car that will spook a horse. You may be driving safely with enough gap between yourself and a horse and rider. However, something else may scare them, so be sure to stay alert”.

The second point is important. Horses can be spooked or distressed for all sorts of reasons. It’s therefore in a driver’s own interests to pass them with respect and care; unless they want to damage their cars or worse.
