There were nearly 90,000 vehicles stolen in the UK over the last year and few were recovered. Here’s how to keep your car safe from car thieves…
Remove Valuables
Not all car thieves are sufficiently confident to get away with your vehicle, some will happily settle for any valuables you’ve left inside. It’s never wise to leave valuables, like tools or electronics, in an unattended vehicle. If you absolutely have to leave them behind, make sure to cover them up and out of view.
Park in Secure Locations
Car thieves aren’t (usually) idiots. They operate on the basis of perceived risks and rewards – like most criminals. A car left in an empty and quiet street is a prime target. Conversely, a car left in a well-attended car park, with barriers and good lighting, is their equivalent of Fort Knox.
Install a Tracker
Unfortunately, most stolen cars are never recovered. Installing a tracking device, however, means having your vehicle stolen isn’t the end of the story. It’ll keep track of where your vehicle is being taken and stored, allowing for it to be recovered. Autoserve Club Members can get a 10% discount on a tracker here.
Secure Your Driveway
Parking on a driveway is always more secure than leaving a vehicle at the roadside. So, if you have one, use it. That said, they’re not impenetrable and car thieves continue to get bolder and bolder. To be on the safe side, have a gate or fold down bollards installed to make it impossible to get away with your vehicle.
Don’t Leave Your Car Unattended
This might sound obvious, but thousands of cars are stolen each year by opportunistic thieves who take advantage of driver negligence. Even leaving your vehicle unattended for a minute with its engine running (or with the keys in the ignition) can spell disaster. This is especially the case during winter when drivers leave their cars to defrost. Stay with your car or lock it up.
Be Aware Of Keyless Thefts
Keyless car thefts are on the rise. Criminals use relay devices to divert signals from keys (often inside a home) straight into a vehicle. The whole process can take as little as a minute and can be carried out without generating much noise. To protect your vehicle, keep your keys away from the front of your house or property; and consider investing in a special fob bag.
