Long car journeys can be physically and mentally demanding. But maintaining our focus is crucial. Here’s how to stay alert and awake at the wheel…
Get Plenty of Sleep
If you’re heading out on a long car journey, it’s really important that you’ve gotten enough high-quality sleep beforehand. Don’t stay up late the night (or day) before and avoid looking at anything distracting, such as a mobile phone.
Take Regular Breaks
Drivers should take regular breaks when making lengthy car journeys. Ideally, they should take one every two hours or so. Take the opportunity to stretch your legs, correct your posture and clear your head.
Avoid Heavy Meals
A heavy meal, or fatty foods, can leave you feeling bloated and uncomfortable. In some instances, they may even leave you feeling fatigued. Go for a light, or energy-dense, option when grabbing a bite to eat.
Stay Hydrated
We’re simply not as alert or focused when we’re dehydrated. Which is why it’s crucial that motorists drink plenty of water when covering significant distances. Keep some water bottles in your vehicle.
Caffeine Could Help
Responsible use of caffeine could prove useful on a road trip, assuming you can safely consume it. Just remember, it’s not a suitable replacement for sleep and regular breaks.
Plan your Journey
The nature of the journey you make, such as which roads you’ll be taking, can have an impact on your performance at the wheel. Some routes might be longer than others. Some may be more demanding, due to more lane changes or denser traffic. Think about your preferences and plan accordingly.
Share the Burden
The best way to take the challenges out of a lengthy car journey is simply to share the responsibility of driving. This isn’t always possible, naturally. But if it is, get one your passengers to have a go at the wheel (assuming they’re insured to drive your vehicle).
