Licence Renewal: DVLA Warns Elderly Drivers Of Scams

The DVLA has warned elderly drivers to be aware of scam websites offering bogus licence renewal services…

Elderly Drivers Warned of Scams

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) is warning elderly drivers to always use its official website when renewing their driving licences. When a driver becomes 70, they must renew their driving licence every three years. Some bogus websites are charging drivers as much as £81 for a service that’s available for free via GOV.UK. The DVLA claims that it’s received notifications from 800 drivers who’ve fallen afoul of the scams.

Unfortunately, many of the websites containing the scam appear high up in Google search engine results; making it hard for some drivers to recognise which is the correct website. All they they need to do is follow this link to reach the legitimate, and free, service: https://www.gov.uk/renew-driving-licence-at-70

‘Secure and Free of Charge’

Julie Lennard, chief executive of the DVLA, has urged elderly drivers to avoid using scam websites. She said, “drivers looking to renew their licence at 70 and over should use our online service which is secure, free of charge, and also the quickest, easiest way to transact with DVLA. Customers usually receive their driving licence in just five days”.

She added, “always remember to always use GOV.UK when using any of DVLA’s many online services”. In other words, never (under any circumstances) pay to renew your driving licence. Anything that asks for payment information is an immediate red flag and should be avoided.
