Lockdowns Delayed Driving Tests By Nine Months

Delayed Driving Tests
Because of the coronavirus pandemic, and subsequent national lockdowns, learner drivers have had to wait nine months longer than usual to take their tests. A survey conducted by Gocompare revealed the extent of the delays, caused by cancelled tests and lessons. Some 1,010 parents of learner drivers were questioned as a part of the research. Just over 29% of them felt that lockdown restrictions set their children back by more than a year.
Some learners actually gave up on getting a driving license altogether. Overall , 27% of them have yet to resume their lessons following the delays and 11% are less inclined to learn how to drive altogether. That said, enthusiasm remains high. More than half of the surveyed parents (52%) said their children were more determined to pass their tests than ever.
Hard Hit by the Pandemic
Ryan Fulthorpe, speaking for Gocompare, said the research demonstrates that learners have been hard hit by the pandemic; especially when it comes to booking their driving tests. He said, “even though Department of Transport figures show that nearly half of learners passed their test between April 2020 and March 2021, the number taking practical tests is vastly reduced”.
He added, “while these figures prove that learner drivers have been pretty hard hit by the pandemic, it’s encouraging to see that most are keen to get back behind a steering wheel and work hard to pass their test, often with the help of the bank of mum and dad”.
