London Introduces £160 Fines For Driving In Cycle Lanes

Driving in a cycle lane in London will now see motorists face £160 fines, as the capital clamps down on the habit…

Cycle Lane Fines

New powers granted to local authorities mean that tougher fines can be issued to motorists who flout the rules of the road; originally only police forces could issue them. In London, Transport for London (TfL) has seized the opportunity to clamp down on drivers who enter the city’s cycle lanes. Offenders will now face fines of £160. The cycle lanes will be monitored by CCTV cameras. However, TfL has stressed that warning noticed will be issued first.

It’s likely that other local authorities across the country will follow TfL’s example. This will mean that drivers flouting cycle lane rules will face similar penalties to those who ignore bus lanes. Reactions to the new fines has been mixed; with some drivers questioning whether cyclists will be fined for leaving the lanes. However, TfL has emphasised that proper enforcement of rules is crucial in keeping cyclists and other road-users safe.

‘More Attractive for Londoners’

In a statement, TfL said “the new enforcement powers will help protect designated space for cyclists and make the capital’s roads more attractive for Londoners to cycle on; helping to build on the huge increases in cycling seen in the capital since the start of the coronavirus pandemic”.

As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, there was a surge in the number of people cycling; especially in order to commute to work or to avoid the use of public transport. This had led to cycling-related accidents rising by a considerable 40% in London.
