Majority Of Drivers Think Cars Now Have Too Much Technology

A new survey has revealed that a significant majority of drivers believe cars have too much expensive technology…

Too Much Technology?

A survey, conducted by carmaker Dacia, has discovered that 78% of British drivers don’t want unnecessary technology in their vehicles. In addition, a third of them only use around 25% of the technology already present in their cars. Moreover, 61% of the survey’s respondents stated that they don’t want to pay for technology they have no intention of using.

Significantly, a large amount of drivers (76%) believe that cars with too much technology can be dangerously distracting. Another 69% admitted that they simply find the latest technologies too complicated to use or enjoy. Naturally, there are discrepancies when it comes to the attitudes of various generations. Those aged between 25 – 34 are the most likely to use the technology in their vehicles. That said, even this age group uses less than half of what’s on offer. On average, drivers only use about 40% of the features of their cars.

Pros and Cons

Dacia is, quite openly, a budget brand; offering some of the most affordable cars in the markets its present in. As a result, its models aren’t typically packed with in-car tech. That said, its survey wasn’t limited to its own models; and so was (possibly) reflective of British drivers in general.

Some in-car tech is indispensable. Things like automatic braking and the latest air-bag systems literally saves lives, and every single day. Other features, like automatic parking assist, can make the lives of drivers much easier. But things are a little murkier when it comes to heated seats or the option to order a pizza from behind the wheel. One problem with our tech-laden motors is the impact on maintenance costs. Complicated electrical systems can go wrong and, when they do, it can be expensive to repair them.

It remains to be seen what the future of in-car tech will be. But drivers would clearly benefit from more choice when it comes to what’s on offer.
