Mercedes Recalls Nearly a Million Vehicles
Mercedes-Benz, the German automaker, has issued a recall affecting nearly a million older vehicles; which may possess a fault with their braking systems. The company intends to contact owners of the affected vehicles which, it says, may be suffering from “advanced corrosion”. Some 993,407 vehicles are affected, spread across numerous countries (70,000 are thought be affected in Germany).
The affected vehicles were built between 2004 and 2015, being from the company’s GL and ML series of R-Class luxury minivans and SUVs. Only last year, Mercedes was forced to recall a similar number of vehicles due to issues with their emergency call systems. These automatically alert emergency services to a vehicle’s location in the event of an accident. The defect increased the risk of incorrect locations being sent.
Increased Risk of Injury
In a statement, Mercedes explained the nature of the recall. It said, “we have found that in some of those vehicles, the function of the brake booster could be affected by advanced corrosion in the joint area of the housing. It might be possible for a particularly strong or hard braking manoeuvre to cause mechanical damage to the brake booster”.
The statement continued, “in such a very rare case, it would not be possible to decelerate the vehicle via the service brake. Thus the risk of a crash or injury would be increased”. The recall will begin immediately and will involve inspecting vehicles and replacing parts if necessary.
