Drivers planning on camping or taking caravan trips are being urged to check whether their destinations are at risk of flooding…
Flood Risks
The government is writing to the nation’s camping and caravan sites, informing them that they must assess their flood risks. In addition, motorists planning on camping or caravanning are being urged to take appropriate precautions. Many landowners and farmers are looking to capitalise on surging numbers of ‘staycations’. However, many of their sites are remote and vulnerable to extreme weather.
As the Environment Agency explained, “flash floods can happen at any time of the year. In Devon and Cornwall, some of the area’s most severe flooding has happened during the summer months, such as Boscastle in August 2004 and Coverack in July 2017″. It continued, “last August, Storm Ellen and then Storm Francis both hit in the summer holiday season”.

A third of all staycations in 2021 will be taking place in Devon and Cornwall; meaning millions of campers could potentially be at risk. Ben Johnstone, speaking for the Environment Agency, said “We urge all campsite owners to be aware of their responsibility and to check their flood risk; owners should consider flood risk as seriously as fire”.
Drivers can determine if their camping spot is at risk by using the following link: https://www.gov.uk/check-flood-risk. They can also call the Floodline on 0345 988 1188 for professional advice. It’s also worth planning journeys well in advance, so that drivers know what they’ll be facing and don’t get lost or stranded when heading somewhere remote.
