Motorway Services: Three In Ten Visitors Will Be In An EV By 2030

Some 30% of drivers making use of motorway services will be using electric cars by 2030. As a result, the industry is having to adapt…

Motorway Services Preparing for EVs

Drivers of electric vehicles are set to make a larger proportion of visitors to motorway services; largely a a consequence of the government’s upcoming ban on the sale of new ICE vehicles in 2030. Ken McMeikan, chief executive of the Moto chain of services, believes they’ll make up a third of visitors by this date; with most of them becoming reliant on the rest stops for charging infrastructure, especially when on longer journeys.

In order to meet demand, Moto is investing in 350kW DC ultra-rapid chargers at all of its locations. These are capable of providing an EV will 100 miles’ worth of range in just 10 minutes. Moto’s services in Rugby are the first to receive the new infrastructure; having been formally launched by Rachel Maclean, the secretary of state for transport. The site, which is worth £40 million and has created 120 jobs, claims to be the UK’s flagship charging site; possessing 24 ultra-rapid charging points.

Accelerating to Net Zero

Moto intends to kit out three more of its motorway services with the chargers by the end of the year. There will also be a minimum of six ultra-fast chargers at all of its sites by the end of 2022.

Rachel Maclean commented on the initiatives. She said, “I’m proud to open the largest ultra-rapid charging site on UK motorways. As we accelerate towards net zero emissions by 2050, we announced last November that we’re bringing forward the phase-out of new petrol and diesel cars to 2030 – and allowing high-performing hybrids until 2035″.

She added, “this zero-emission future will need a world-leading electric vehicle charging network. Rugby Services and Moto’s long-term plan and investment in EV is a perfect example of that in action”.
