RAC: ‘Always Drive As If You Are Being Watched By The Police’

The RAC has warned drivers that they should ‘always drive as if you are being watched by the police’, as police receive 89 dash cam clips a day…

Dash Cam Footage

Police across the UK are, on average, receiving 89 dash cam clips a day; all depicting alleged driving offences. According to a Freedom of Information request, 32,370 dash cam clips were submitted to 24 police forces in 2019; up from 15,159 in 2018. More importantly, 8,148 (25%) of the clips led to a prosecution in some form.

The Metropolitan Police received the largest share of clips, sitting at 8,082. It was followed by Surrey (3,542 clips) and the West Midlands (3,242 clips). The clips depict practically every driving offence that can be conceived of. Some contain incidents of dangerous driving, driving too closely to cyclists, skipping red lights, using mobile phones at the wheel and even driving without an MOT.

A Warning From The RAC

Nextbase, a dash cam manufacturer, claims that its own footage portal have saved police forces 170,000 hours of work over two years alone. Simon Williams, a road safety spokesman for the RAC, has called dash cams a “game changer”, allowing for dangerous drivers to be prosecuted even if a traffic officer wasn’t present to witness their behaviour. He said, “as so many drivers and cyclists are now using dash cams and helmet cameras, every road user needs to be very conscious that any of their actions that aren’t in accordance with the law could end up with the police. Some will inevitably find this out the hard way while others will hopefully become increasingly mindful of it”.

In other words, modern drivers are never free of scrutiny. No matter how remote, or empty, a road might seem a driver’s actions can lead to prosecution. Which is why it’s so important that motorists obey the Highway Code and drive safely at all times. That said, dash cams work both ways. Whilst they present a danger of prosecution, they can also be used by responsible drivers to protect themselves from their irresponsible peers; making them a sound investment.
