Renault Zoe Gets ZERO-Star Safety Rating From Euro NCAP

The electric Renault Zoe has become the third car in history to get a shocking zero star rating from Euro NCAP…

Zero Stars for Renault Zoe EV

If you’re thinking of purchasing an electric Renault Zoe, you may want to hold fire. It’s just become the third car in history to receive a zero-star safety rating from Euro NCAP. The only other cars to receive such a paltry score were the Fiat Punto and Fiat Panda.

The Zoe performed particularly poorly during a side pole test. This replicates the effects of crashing into a tree or lamppost. In Euro NCAP’s test, the dummy driver’s head collided with the intruding pole. Naturally, in a real-world situation this could lead to serious injury or death. The low score is largely a product of Renault’s decision to remove many of the safety features that had been installed in the model previously.

‘A Shame’

Matthew Avery, a member of Euro NCAP’s board, said the result was a shame given Renault’s typically good track record. He said, “the adult occupant score of 43 percent for the Zoe is the lowest we have seen in 11 years. It is a shame to see Renault threaten a safety pedigree built from the inception of the rating”.

Indeed, Renault was the first automaker to receive a five-star safety rating back in 2001 thanks to its Laguna 2 model. This result was, in fact, largely due to side head airbags – now removed from the electric Zoe. The current Zoe has also lost its autonomous emergency braking and lane departure warning features; causing it to score a miserable 14% in the test’s Safety Assist category.

Ultimately, it would appear that some car manufacturers are rolling back safety features in order to save money. As a consequence, driver’s lives may be put at risk.
