Soaring Road Accidents
A new report by insurance company NFU Mutual suggests that road accidents will rise by a fifth (18%); following lockdown restrictions being eased. From Monday 12th April, non-essential retail, personal care, outdoor hospitality, indoor leisure venues and self-contained holiday lets will open to the public. Of 2,000 surveyed drivers, 37% stated that they plan on driving to a holiday destination when restrictions are lifted. A spokesman for the company has stated that the figures are based on those that followed lockdown easing in 2020. For instance, road accident claims made to the company rose by 22% over the late May Bank Holiday last year.
The report also suggests that many drivers are “feeling nervous” about making long journeys. Some of the most nervous driving demographics, including drivers aged between 18 – 34 (63%) and more than half of all Londoners (53%), are also some of the most likely to be planning lengthy trips.
Drivers Need To Be Vigilant
Jade Devlin, NFU Mutual motor insurance specialist, is urging drivers to be cautious when taking to the wheel. She said, “while uncertainty remains on whether European holidays are on the cards, our research shows that millions will be taking to the UK’s roads for holidays from next week when lockdown eases. Where easing has happened in 2020 we’ve received sharp surges in reported car accident; with roads getting busier very quickly and drivers taking their first long distance drives for a while”.
She concluded, “we’re sadly expecting the same from 12 April when many venues and holiday lets start opening up; so would urge drivers to take care on the roads”. So, if you haven’t driven much over the course of lockdown and plan on making a lengthy trip, remember that you’re probably out of practice; just like millions of other drivers. Obey the Highway Code, take things slowly and ensure your vehicle is up to the task after being out of action for a lengthy period.
