Slow Punctures: Here’s Everything You Need To Know

Not every tyre puncture is dramatic and instantaneous. Knowing how to spot, and address, slow punctures can save you time and stress…

What’s A Slow Puncture?

As the name suggests, slow punctures are caused by tiny holes in a car’s tyre. These allow very small amounts of air to escape, gradually causing the tyre to go flat. Unlike regular punctures, you’re unlikely to hear a ‘hissing’ as the air escapes. Due to how slow it can take tyres with slow punctures to deflate, and the lack of visual or audible signs, they’re easy to initially miss.

What Causes Them?

Generally, drivers end up with a slow puncture after driving over sharp or jagged debris. Screws and nails are often to blame; and these may, or may not, end up stuck in the tread. Other causes might include damaged wheel rims (often a result of rust) or issues with a tyre’s valve. In the latter case, the valve’s cap may not be tight enough to retain air.

The Warning Signs

Whilst it’s difficult to spot physical signs of slow punctures (barring embedded debris), there are signs you can pick up on in terms of the car’s handling. You may find that your vehicle is drifting or veering to one side. The suspension may feel harder or the responsiveness may not be as good as it usually is. A vibrating steering wheel is also a classic sign that one of your tyres is gradually losing air.

How To Address Them

It goes without saying, but any type of puncture poses serious safety issues. If the slow puncture is a product of debris, a mechanic or technician will simply remove it and apply a rubber plug. If the damage is a product of corrosion, a dented rim or a failing sidewall, it’s likely a full replacement will be required.

Some drivers opt to fix slow punctures themselves, if only temporarily, using DIY repair kits. This may work in some cases, but it’s always best to let a professional attend to any damages. Your car’s tyres are the only thing separating you from the road itself, don’t neglect them.
