Supermarkets Install Nearly 1,000 Chargers

It’s becoming increasingly easy to charge an EV at supermarkets. They’ve managed to install just shy of 1,000 since early 2020, and Morrisons and Tesco are far ahead of the competition. There are now 2,059 chargers at the nation’s stores, having risen by an impressive 85% from 1,112 at the start of 2020. Overall, 8% of the UK’s 26,000 public chargers are now located at supermarkets.

Tesco is leading the charge when it comes to installing charging infrastructure. It now has 922 chargers across 4,008 of its stores. For perspective, its closest rival (Asda) is 676 chargers behind. Nevertheless, only 13% of Tesco stores have the infrastructure. Meanwhile, Morrisons has proportionally the most stores with EV chargers, with 40% of its 112 stores offering them to customers.

Crucial in Electrification

Sarah Winward-Kotecha, RAC director of EVs, has called the role of supermarkets in electrification as ‘crucial’. She said, “while the majority of drivers going electric will be fortunate enough to be able to charge easily on their driveways at home, for the remainder it won’t be so easy so having access to free, or affordable, charging facilities at supermarkets is very important, and could even help accelerate EV take-up in the first place”. She added, “rapid charge points, in particular, make it possible to run an EV easily without access to a home charger as drivers can get their cars topped up in the time it takes them to do their weekly shop”.

The RAC is now calling on supermarkets to clearly communicate their long-term plans for EV chargers. This, the organisation claims, will help to foster confidence amongst drivers who still suffer from range-anxiety. Especially those who don’t, or can’t, have access to home chargers.
