Brit’s Like Ford’s Transit Van
It’s official, Ford’s Transit Custom is the best-selling vehicle in the UK so far in 2021; meaning it’s outperformed every new car on the market. It’s bagged an impressive 26,978 registrations in the first half of 2021. For comparison, the most popular passenger car, the Vauxhall Corsa, has had 24,399 registrations. The transit van has also beaten Ford’s own Fiesta, by 5,400 vehicles.
But whilst the mid-sized van is popular, it’s not Ford’s only success story in the van segment this year. Its larger Ford Transit has secured 17,644 sales of its own. Moreover, the Ford Transit Connect and Ford Ranger have also made it to the year-to-date top 10 best-selling vans list; meaning the American automaker essentially dominates the commercial vehicle sector.
Semiconductor Woes
Whilst Ford’s van sales are impressive, they’re not indicative of a nation suddenly enamoured with driving around in commercial vehicles. Serious supply-chain issues, especially concerning semiconductors, have had significant effects on consumer confidence.
Mike Hawes, chief executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, commented on the issue. He said, “semi-conductor supply issues have extended lead times, but business confidence is growing and fleets are embarking on decarbonisation programmes”. He added, “it’s good to see the van market continue to perform well, with pent up demand, online retail and the construction sectors all on the rise”. In other words, vans are competing with pretty low car sales – allowing them to sneak past passenger cars in the best-selling lists.
