The New Volkswagen ID.3 Is Now On Sale In The UK

Volkswagen’s new, all-electric ID.3 is now available to purchase in the UK for £36,000. Cheaper models are expected in the future…

Get Your Hands On An ID.3

British motorists can finally get their hands on Volkswagen’s most significant car since the Golf – the all-electric, ID.3 hatchback. For now just one version, the ID.3 1st Edition, is available for £38,880 (£35,880 after the plug-in grant). This is a spruced up launch edition, but it’ll be followed by other models in the near-future; some of which will be cheaper. For now, drivers will have to be satisfied by the 1st Edition’s 58kWh battery pack and a 201bhp electric motor. Both of which allow for a functional 260 miles of range on a full battery, 0-62mph in 7.3 seconds and a top speed of 99mph. A 100kW charging facility will also enable up to 180 miles of travel in 30 minutes.

If this isn’t enough, the 1st Edition also boasts 19-inch diamond cut wheels, tinted rear windows, exclusive badging, LED Matrix headlights and a spoiler on the rear. For now, four colours are available. A metallic grey shade called ‘Moonstone Grey’ comes as standard, but for an addition £620, you can go for white, grey or turquoise. Interior colour schemes include white and orange, white and black or black alone. Speaking of the interior, owners will also enjoy a 10-inch central touchscreen display and a fully digital instrument panel – not to mention an ambient lighting system with 30 colours to choose from.

An Historic Car

In Volkswagen’s own words, the ID.3 is considered to be as important as the Beetle and the Golf – the automaker’s most definitive models. It’s effectively launching the company’s electrification bid and, ultimately, its attempt to make all-electric cars mainstream. Whether the ID.3 will really enter the annals of definitive car models remains to be seen. But with a relatively affordable price, viable range and contemporary styling, it certainly has as good a chance as any. The ID.3 is one of eight models planned in Volkswagen’s I.D. Series. All-electric crossovers, saloons and estates are currently in the works – not to mention various trims for each respective vehicle.

What we’re seeing with Volkswagen’s I.D. series is, essentially, the democratisation of BEV mobility. Once the preserve of wealthy early-adopters, all-electric cars are only a year or two away from being realistic, and attractive, options for motorists. That’s great news for the climate, tech-boffins and drivers who enjoy instant torque and near-silent driving experiences.
