There’s Been A 50% Increase In Parking Tickets
The number of parking tickets issued to drivers by private companies has soared by 50% over the course of the year…
Surging Parking Tickets
Data released by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has revealed that Brits are facing soaring numbers of parking tickets. Between April and June alone, a record 2.7 million tickets were issued by private companies. This is up from the 1.5 million tickets issued during the same period in 2021. For perspective, the new figures mean that 30,000 drivers are being issued a parking ticket each and every day.
Earlier this year, the government scrapped plans to introduce a Private Parking Code of Practice. This would have sought to end some of the most frustrating and controversial practices of the private parking sector. In particular, it would have capped private fines at £50, down from £100, and provide drivers with a longer ‘grace’ period.
Private parking companies have been accused of using confusing and unclear signage, aggressively pursuing claims and seeking unfair fees.
‘Deeply Disappointing’
Nicholas Lyes, the RAC’s head of roads policy, commented on the DVLA’s latest data. He said, “these figures clearly demonstrate why a new code of practice is so desperately needed, alongside a single independent appeals system”.
He continued, “we also need the Government to stand firm on introducing a £50 charge cap and a ban on unjustified debt recovery fees. It is totally unacceptable for the private parking industry to continue dragging its feet, which means too many motorists continue to be unfairly issued parking charge notices”.
It remains to be seen whether the Government will take action against private parking firms; or whether their lobbying power will allow them to continue to issue drivers with unfair fees.
