Car Clocking
When a car is ‘clocked’ its mileage has been deliberately tampered with. It’s a favourite practice of criminals and fraudsters in making older, more heavily used cars appear newer and more desirable. After all, a car that’s covered fewer miles is likely to be in a better condition overall than those that have covered a lot of ground. According to vehicle history provider HPI, as many as one in every sixteen vehicles has a mileage discrepancy; which actually represents a 25% increase since 2014. Collectively, it costs motorists around £800 million annually. It makes sense, then, for consumers to be aware of the problem; especially when buying used cars or vehicles from private sellers.
The Cars Getting Clocked
Research involving an analysis of 2.5 million vehicles have revealed which models are most likely to be have been clocked. Conducted by Rapid Car Check, it discovered that the BMW X5 is the car that’s most likely to be affected. Some 11.7% of the 7,531 analysed BMW X5s showed mileage discrepancies. It was followed by the Vauxhall Vectra and the Peugeot 206 which had clocking rates of 11.5% and 11.3% respectively. The figures were obtained by running a vast set of vehicle mileages, sourced from the government’s MOT database.
As it stands, it’s illegal to sell a vehicle without mentioning any mileage discrepancies. Amazingly though, it isn’t illegal to tamper with a car’s odometer. This has caused the Local Government Association (LGA), which represents councils in England and Wales, to call for a ban on DIY ‘mileage correction’ tools. These can be purchased online for as little as £100. Councillor Simon Blackburn, chair of the LGA’s Safer and Stronger Communities Board, described car clocking as “a rising major fraud, which not only rips off motorists, but can have dangerous implications”. He advised consumers to “make thorough checks to ensure that the vehicle is showing its true mileage and that its service history and MOT certificate are accurate”. He stressed that “councils won’t hesitate to bring any car dealer or private seller to justice who shows a blatant disregard for safety and consumer rights”.
