Stumped by Brake Lights
A new survey, involving 2,000 drivers, has revealed that up to two-thirds of motorists can’t identify a brake light. The figures weren’t much better for other warning lights, either. Some 51% couldn’t identify a tyre pressure light and 59% don’t know what a battery warning light looks like. Conducted by Fixter, the research also revealed that a shocking 40% of respondents freely admit that they ignore warning lights as they appear on their car’s dashboard.
Knowledge seems to vary significantly between the sexes and age groups. For instance, men (on average) recognised 53% of warning lights. For women, the figure sat at 38%. Drivers aged between 18 – 24 know an average of just 32% of lights. This rises to 52% for drivers aged above 65. Amazingly, just shy of half of the respondents couldn’t tell if their car’s fogs lights were on by looking at the dashboard.
Troubling Figures
Limvirak Chea, CEO at Fixter, commented on the survey’s results. He said, “these figures are troubling and show there’s a lot to be done to make Britain’s roads safe. It’s important that people are aware of the possible hazards which the warning lights tell drivers about their vehicle. By getting your car regularly checked and making sure you get your MOT done, this can offset any future problems you may have further down the line”.
He added, “if things do go seemingly wrong, it’s important to know where to put them right”.
