Panic buying for fuel has caused two-thirds of independent petrol stations to close due to empty tanks, new figures show…
Petrol Stations Forced to Close
Despite calls for calm from the government, drivers across the country have resorted to panic buying fuel; as a consequence, two-thirds of independent petrol stations have been forced to close. The supply-chains of supermarkets and other large providers have largely been unaffected, barring a few regions of the country. However, localised difficulties (largely due to a shortage of HGV drivers) have caused motorists to flock to the pumps.
The result has been empty tanks at the majority of independent petrol stations; which is, arguably, the best example of why panic buying is completely self-defeating.
Government Response
In response to the mounting fuel shortages, the government has relaxed competition rules. This means oil firms can, for a while, cooperate in managing their stocks and distribution methods. In addition, it’s weighing up the pros and cons of deploying military drivers to make up for the shortage of HGV drivers.
Kwasi Kwarteng, the Business Secretary, commented on the situation. He said, “while there has always been and continues to be plenty of fuel at refineries and terminals, we are aware that there have been some issues with supply chains. He added, “this is why we will enact the Downstream Oil Protocol to ensure industry can share vital information and work together more effectively to ensure disruption is minimised”.
Grant Shapps, the Transport Secretary, has urged drivers to be calm and has stressed that there’s sufficient amounts of fuel to meet demand. In addition, he stated that the government was doing everything in its power to address the HGV driver shortage.
