Vauxhall’s Corsa is now officially the UK’s best-selling car, having overtaken Ford’s Fiesta, according to new figures…
Corsa UK’s Best-Selling Car
The Ford Fiesta has been the UK’s best-selling car for over 50 years. However, it’s finally been supplanted by Vauxhall’s Corsa model. Last year, a whopping 41,000 Corsas were sold in the UK; beating off every other new model by a considerable margin. Meanwhile, just 27,500 Ford Fiesta were sold over the course of 2021. For perspective, such a paltry figure actually puts it outside of the country’s top ten list.
It’s been over 50 years since a Ford model failed to make the UK’s top ten best-selling vehicles. This was in 1971 when it released the Austin 1100/1300. This disruption is a testament to the changing landscape within the automotive industry; rocked to its core by the coronavirus pandemic and global semiconductor shortages.
Good News for Tesla
Ford’s decline isn’t the only significant development of 2021. Tesla, for instance, has flourished within the British market. Its Model 3 took the second best-selling car spot, behind the Corsa. An amazing 9,600 Model 3s were sold last December alone. Overall, EVs bagged over 11% of the market last year – with more being sold in 2021 than in 2016-20 combined.
This means that Tesla has become a strong brand in the UK, and that electric vehicles are rapidly rising in popularity. Whether the momentum will be maintained, however, remains to be seen. Concerns have been raised that the nation’s charging infrastructure is inadequate; something that’s bound to get worse as more people make the switch to electric models. In addition, EVs are still significantly more expensive than ICE equivalents; preventing millions of motorists from making the switch.
