When Is The Best Time To Get Your Tyres Replaced?

Maintaining the health and performance of your vehicle is vital. Therefore, knowing when to replace your tyres is crucial.

Why do tyres need to be changed?

Overtime, tyres wear down due to various factors such as, mileage, road conditions and weather. Tyres play a crucial role in ensuring your safety and providing a smooth driving experience. They are the only link between the vehicle and the road, so ensuring to replace them at the right time is very important.

How will I know when I need to change my tyre?

  1. Tread depth – This is a primary indicator for replacing your tyres. It is the vertical measurement between the top of the tread rubber to the bottom of the tyres grooves. Having the correct tread depth will ensure that the traction and handling on the tyre is maintained well, especially in wet or snowy conditions. There is a test that can be made out with a 20 pence coin to check your tread depth. Simply just place the coin in the main tread multiple times, at various points around the tyre. If the outer band of the coin is visible it means the tyre tread is to shallow and will need to be changed.
  2. Uneven tread wear – This can be a common issue caused by misalignment, suspension problems or improper inflation. If it is not checked then it will affect your vehicles handling and increase the risk of a blowout. Making regular inspections, checking to see if the sides are wearing out faster or the centre tread is wearing down more quickly.
  3. Age of tyres – Overtime your tyres will degrade, which can be caused by heat, sunlight and rain. Tyres should be replaced every five to six years regardless of their condition. However, if you notice that your tyres are looking worn or damaged then it is best to get them replaced before. You can check the manufacturing date on the side of your tyre.
  4. Visible damage – Inspecting your tyres for visible damage is vital as it can weaken the structural integrity of the tyre. When looking at your tyres keep an eye out for any cracks, cuts on the sidewall and treads or any bulges. These can be caused by potholes, curbs or other road hazards.

By paying attention to the above areas of your tyre along with consulting a technician, it will help to ensure your tyres are kept in the best condition. They will help with smoother driving, improved fuel efficiency and safety on the road.
